At the height of Europe's refugee crisis, TIME followed three Syrian families as they prepared to raise a child in a foreign land. All of the women learned of their pregnancies on the road and none expected to deliver in a refugee camp, far from the homes they fled in Syria.
To launch the project, TIME published four separate covers in December 2015 and then followed-up with six print stories written by Aryn Baker accompanied by photographs by Lynsey Addario.
Over the course of more than a year, videographer Francesca Trianni published intimate video stories in short and long form published on TIME's website and social channels.
TIME also launched this award winning interactive, following the story of newborn baby Heln and her mother Taimaa, a Syrian refugee seeking asylum in Europe. Taimaa tells of the frustrations of waiting for asylum, the quiet moments of new motherhood, and the lonely struggle to fit in a new land, through a series of text messages with TIME video journalist Francesca Trianni. The intimate and immersive page features photographs by Lynsey Addario and reporting by TIME’s Aryn Baker.
